The Wherehouse is a well established watering hole, considered by many as the cornerstone of the historic Liberty Street corridor revitalization in Newburgh, New York.
Serving a hearty fare of comfort style food —from light pub fare, half-pound burgers to full dinners —with an exceptionally large vegan and vegetarian fare selection where both carnivores and herbivores can not only peacefully coexist, but can also break bread together.
We have 16 rotating draft lines featuring some of the best New York based beers. Our full bar offers changing specialty cocktails.
Live music and eclectic decor create an atmosphere that the New York Times referred to as “The Place with the East Village vibe…” so come TUNE IN, TURN ON and DROP IN!
A few years after moving to Newburgh in 1997, Dan Brown and his wife Michele Basch started looking for a suitable location to open a local bar and grill…and though the Newburgh Waterfront had already been developed, they wanted to establish a location within the city proper– in particular, the historic area near Washingtons Headquarters near the Liberty Street corridor.
After numerous false starts, they settled on a location at 119 Liberty Street, the former home of an abondoned beauty parlor. Employing the services of River Architects in Cold Spring, New York, Dan and Michele told them they envisioned the area similar to Haight Asbury (where a rundown area of the city was slowly brought back to life with music, color and… in our case, good food).
We broke ground in late 2008 on The Wherehouse (the name originated from the concerns of friends when asked “where” they were opening the restaurant).
With many years combined experience in the food, beverage and nightlife business, Dan and Michele’s dream of creating a gathering place for all people of Newburgh and its visitors came to fruition when they opened doors on February 25, 2009.
Though faced with many challenges (the restaurant business itself; the reputation of Newburgh; the economic roller coaster, and finally 2 years of COVID when The Wherehouse only closed when mandated) we are still standing stronger than ever.
From the vision of one lone madman on the corner, The Wherehouse stands as a literal cornerstone in the revitalization of this historic city. So when you’re in town, please visit the place where the owner proudly points out on his never polished copper bar “for every stain there is a story, and every glass ring a tale” … and become part of the history of The Wherehouse as well.
